African-Centered Psychotherapy (ACP), Course #5207, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by Sobek LLC as an individual course. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: 12/06/2023 - 12/06/2025. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will introduce Africancentrism, African-Centered worldviews and present them as the preferred therapeutic modal for persecuted people.  Topics explored will include Prevention, Racism and White Supremacy, and the Roots of Psychopathology among Black/African people.  The importance of economic development and integration, communal and social cohesion and interdependence will be examined.  The efficacy of intervention and social services will also be discussed. 

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

1.  Complete an African-Centered Comprehensive Assessment

2.  Identify at least 3 African-Centered treatment goals

3.  Develop an African-Centered treatment plan

4.  Assess, identify and treat Cultural Misorientation, Internalized Racial Oppression and Mentacide

5.  Advocate for changes to social policy, law and practices that prioritize the prevention and elimination of racism, and white supremacy

6.  Advocate for changes to social work education and training that accommodate African-Centered worldviews and indigenous standards of care

7.  Collaborate with economically segregated people to create sustainable economic programs capable of meeting their material needs, building generational wealth and power

8.  Conduct a needs assessment and create an asset map

9.  Integrate African-Centered worldviews into practice
